The Equivalence Command
The Equivalence command provides access to forms of an expression that are equivalent to the highlighted term. This command typically shows a result list with more than one option. The keystroke for the Equivalence command is the "q" key (the "e" key is used for the Expand command).
The equivalent expressions provided by this command are normally expressions that are not available using other commands like Expand or Simplify. The equivalence command is a kind of "catch-all" for equivalent forms that don't fit neatly into any of the other commands.
Examples of the functionality in the Equivalence command include:
- Identity relations are commonly found in the Equivalence command.
- Many of the trig identities are available through the Equivalence command, though some are also available using the Expand command. In these cases, either command can be used.
- The Equivalence command also provides a way to manipulate units into other combinations that are equivalent to the original term.
In some cases, manipulations that can be done using the Simplify or Expand commands can also appear in the Equivalence command. This is done in cases where a manipulation from one form to another can be reasonably considered to be either a simplification or just an equivalent form.
